Look around your staffroom
Look around your staffroom. I expect you know who is juggling childcare with work, who has just returned from sick leave, who is rushing off after school to check in on their mum. But do you know who is on the brink of a relationship break up, who has recently lost a close friend, who is worried about their own mental health?
The truth is you can’t know what is going on with everybody, and you can’t fix everyone’s lives. What you can do though is create a culture where demands on people are reasonable, and where they are supported to do the best job possible.
We often talk about how school can be the constant, safe place in some children’s lives. That can be true for staff too. When things are going wrong at home, it can be a relief to step into your professional role and put down your personal worries for a while.
Be kind. You never know what someone else might be dealing with.
